Bronzeville, composed of Harambee and the northern portions of Halyard Park and Brewer’s Hill neighborhoods, is Milwaukee’s African American hub of activity and culture. Owing its name from the Swahili phrase “to come together and pull”, Harambee is one of the city’s oldest Black neighborhoods, and the location of many civil rights actions during the 1960s through 1980s. The area is home to many Black owned businesses, including the infamous Gee’s Clippers, The Bronzeville Collective, and America’s Black Holocaust Museum.
