The Near West Side is nestled in the heart of Milwaukee, and is located just west of downtown and northeast of Miller Park. Home to the internationally renowned Marquette University, the area has over 350 businesses and has one of the city’s most diverse populations. If you are looking for a new Black owned business to experience, discover a handful of places that call the Near West Side home.
In the mood for food…
The Near West Side is home to three well known Black owned restaurants. If your taste buds are not sure what to crave, Jizzles Sandwich Shop offers the perfect variety of dining options. Perfectly seasoned burgers, fish, and sandwiches are just a handful of offerings, and are definitely worth the wait. Just a few blocks away is Goodway Grille, satisfying your wings, burgers, pizza, chicken sandwiches, nachos and tacos needs. The restaurant also serves breakfast, perfect for the early birds. Perhaps the most well known of the three restaurants is Daddy’s Soul Food & Grille, which recently completed an expansion and renovation. Home to arguably the best soul and comfort food in the city, the pork chops, peach cobbler, catfish, and ribs are all must try dishes. Vegetarian options are available as well!
Things to do…
During normal times the Near West Side is home to a variety of entertainment, including concerts at The Rave / Eagles Club and the bandshell at nearby Washington Park. While a lot of businesses have temporarily closed, The Zen Dragonfly continues to offer tarot classes. Charm and path readings, reiki, and yoga sessions are just a sampling of their services.
For the fashion fiends JazzyRae’ Jewels & Accessories offers a great variety of clothes and jewelry for women. Whether you’re in the mood for jazzy or classy pieces – the store is known for making fashion statements without saying a word.
